孢子單生、無柄，或著生在或長或短的孢子梗上，孢子梗時(shí)常分枝成簇。菌落小，直徑一般2～3微米，通常橙黃色或紅色，邊有深褐黑色、藍(lán)色，表面覆蓋一層粉沫狀的孢子。一般為好氣性腐生。 分布狀況編輯大多分布在土壤或湖底泥土中，堆肥和廄肥中也不少。約有30多種。是產(chǎn)生抗生素較多的一個(gè)屬。有的種還積累維生素B12。獲取與用途編輯可以用真空冷凍干燥法獲取，具體用途有：抗細(xì)菌；抗金黃色葡萄球菌；抗枯草芽孢桿菌；抗真菌；抗白色念珠菌544850。代表菌株編輯產(chǎn)生慶大霉素的棘孢小單孢菌和絳紅小單孢菌以及(新型)青銅小單孢菌(Mm．chalcea)． 桿狀小體（rhabdoid）是扁形動(dòng)物渦蟲類表皮細(xì)胞層內(nèi)或皮下實(shí)質(zhì)組織中形成的，向體表伸出的桿狀體。可與原生動(dòng)物的毛胞和刺胞動(dòng)物的刺胞相比擬，是由小形的均質(zhì)的強(qiáng)折光性物質(zhì)形成的桿狀體（rhabdite），與由細(xì)粒組成的中心塊的周圍包有透明層的假桿狀體（rbammite）是有區(qū)別的。但此外也有兩端發(fā)尖的被稱為梭形體。
